Colorado lawmakers from both parties criticize the move of Space Command.

A bipartisan group from Colorado’s Congressional delegation criticized President Trump on Tuesday for his choice to shift the U.S. Space Command headquarters from Colorado to Alabama.

“This move harms both our state and our nation,” they stated, expressing their intention to fight against the decision.

Lawmakers, spanning both parties, voiced concerns that this relocation might give strategic advantages to adversaries like China, Russia, and Iran, while also warning that the existing space defense equipment could deteriorate over time.

Furthermore, they argued that the shift could waste billions of taxpayer dollars.

“Preparing for potential threats is essential. It’s crucial to keep operational capabilities intact. Mobile commands just don’t offer the same operational benefits as those based in Colorado Springs,” they emphasized. “Colorado Springs is well-suited for the Space Command, and we must take steps to ensure it remains here.”

They also raised alarms about potential negative impacts on local employment and the economy, noting that many local businesses and workers are closely tied to Space Command.

“These individuals don’t simply follow military orders; many leave the industry entirely, causing a disruption in a workforce that can take years to rebuild,” they added.

On Tuesday, Trump announced the decision to relocate the command to Alabama, effectively concluding a nearly five-year debate over its permanent location.

This decision reverses the Biden administration’s plan to keep the command at its temporary headquarters in Colorado, following Trump’s initial move during his first term. Critics had labeled this last-minute decision as a political favor to Alabama.

Both states recognize the significance of the Space Command, which is responsible for missile launch warnings, satellite protection, and military communication. Elected officials from both sides have been advocating for years to house this critical operation.
