Colorado Secretary of State Jenna Griswold (D) after suggesting that recent efforts to use the 14th Amendment to keep former President Trump from voting in the state amounted to “election interference.” He called the president a “liar.”
“Trump is a liar who doesn’t respect the Constitution,” Griswold said in an interview on MSNBC on Saturday.
“It’s un-American to say that part of the 14th Amendment is election interference and thinking about how to protect the Constitution is election interference,” she continued. “We know the former president is a liar who will do anything to stay in power.”
Mr. Griswold and Mr. Trump are named in a recent lawsuit filed by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), which claims that Mr. Griswold and Mr. Trump have been sued under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment (also known as the Insurrection Clause). , claims the former president is being disqualified from the 2024 vote.
A Washington, D.C.-based watchdog group has asked a court to disqualify Mr. Trump’s actions related to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, including Mr. Griswold’s 2024 Republican primary ballot and the state’s futures voting. asked to be prohibited from participating. .
Griswold added Saturday that he intends to “see this case through to its conclusion” and said he thinks the issue is “a good thing for the court to consider.”
“Section 3 of the Fourteenth Amendment disqualifies any person sworn to support the Constitution from holding public office if he or she participates in rebellion, insurrection, or aid or comfort to enemies of the Constitution. “It clearly states in very clear terms that you will be deprived,” she said.
“And Donald Trump incited an insurrection. There are big constitutional questions about whether he should be disqualified from Colorado’s vote,” Griswold continued. “So we’re going to see this case through to its conclusion, but ultimately I think it’s important for the court to look at it to provide guidance.”
