Colorado Gov. Jared Police, D., signed the law last week to ban semi-automatic firearms from the Democrats. This means that state residents hoping for an AR-15 will need to first secure a “qualifying card” from the local sheriff.
Breitbart News has tracked the ban on semi-automatic firearms as it went through the Colorado Legislature and warned that it would ban the highly popular AR and Ak rifles and their variations, as well as numerous shotguns and several pistols.
Governor of Police signed the law on April 10, 2025, and the ban will come into effect in August 2026. Those who want an AR-15 or similar rifle, or either a banned shotgun or Pistols, must then go to the local sheriff and be approved with him.
The Colorado Sun I explained it How the process works: “…people have the ability to purchase firearms that are prohibited under Senate Bill 3 if they obtain the “Firearm Safety Course Qualification Card.” To get the card, you must first be vetted by the county sheriff. This includes background checks. ”

Once someone has obtained their qualification cards, they must complete up to several dozen hours of training over two days and pass the test, depending on whether they have already completed the Hunter Education Course. At that point, they will be allowed to purchase weapons that are prohibited under Senate Bill 3.
Creating a “eligibility card” requirement for a particular gun purchase will place Colorado in a similar situation as he is currently deployed in Illinois. Gun owners must first submit to the approval process to receive the firearm owner’s ID (FOID) card. In Illinois, a FOID card is required to own a firearm in Colorado. For now, a “qualifying card” is required to acquire a banned firearm.
However, criminals can obtain a firearm that is prohibited as usual.
