Colorado’s Deion Sanders explains aversion to coaching in NFL

The Deion Sanders played in the NFL for nearly a decade and a half, winning two Super Bowls along the way. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011.

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current NFL analyst Troy Aikman joined Sanders and streamed on Tubi for Sanders' show “We Got Today Today.”

At one point in the broader conversation, the former Cowboys star pair discussed the possibility of Sanders returning to professional football one day.

Despite his professional knowledge, Sanders pointed out the modern practice style of the NFL.

“That's how we practiced,” Sanders said. “I know it's cute, but I couldn't coach a pro ball. How they practice, how they go through it, I couldn't take it — I'm as a man and as a soccer fan. I care about the game. …I can't allow it to happen on my watch.”

Sanders became a media star after he finished his career. However, in recent years, Sanders has focused on coaching at the university level. After three successful seasons at Jackson State, Sanders got a job at the University of Colorado.

Buffalo improved under Sanders in 2024, and with success, Sanders added fuel to the idea that he could soon leave college football for the NFL.

This is not the first time Sanders has rejected a proposal that he would make a leap into the NFL. In 2022, he said he “didn't coach” at the professional level “60 minutes” and “we couldn't coach.”

“I couldn't coach professional ball,” he explained. “It's not just fame and money. It's about the love of the game. It's about the present, and I couldn't accept it. It's going to be hard to get it to happen under the watch.”

When he appeared in “Good Morning America” last month, Sanders was once again asked about his NFL coaching outlook.

“The only way I consider is to coach my son,” Sanders said. “Not my son. My son.”

The Cowboys parted ways with director Mike McCarthy in January. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones confirmed that the franchise had a conversation with Sanders while they were searching for their next head coach. Dallas eventually hired Brian Schottenheimer, but Ikeman said that Sanders would “mean a lot” for him to lead the Cowboys.

“What do you think Deion will be?” Aikman said. “I said, 'I think Deion is great.' There are a few people who know I'm not betting.

Ikeman said he understands how Sanders can make an impact at the university level.

“You're not impressed with young men that you're in college, but to suggest that he's not good at it or not successful, I really know people's stories about Deion. I don't think so. Dallas, Dion, had been a really good fit as he was commanding the room.

“He's character, people would have known that he was in charge. That's what every organization says is the head coach who calls the shots and knows he's in charge. I think it's important to be there.”

When the team won the 1996 Super Bowl, Aikman and Sanders played for the Cowboys.

Sanders coached Heisman Trophy winners Travis Hunter and his sons Shedure Sanders and Siro Sanders in their first two seasons in Colorado. He also coached the Jackson State trio. All three are pursuing a career in professional football, with Chedur and Hunter expected to be their first round picks in the April NFL Draft.
