Daniel Jones’ Future with the Colts: An Imminent Extension

It seems that Daniel Jones’ single-season contract with the Indianapolis Colts is about to see an extension.

General manager Chris Ballard is returning on Thursday and has shared some thoughts on the team’s direction. Jones, who was poised to be the starting quarterback for 2025, was having a notable comeback season before a devastating Achilles injury sidelined him late last year.

“I think there’s a mutual interest here,” Ballard remarked regarding Jones, who had previously signed a one-year, $14 million deal with the Colts last March. “I’m feeling optimistic about Daniel Jones. His current status and his future look promising.”

As reported by USA Today, Ballard expressed confidence that the former Giants quarterback “has a really bright future here in Indianapolis.”

Drafted in the first round in 2019, Jones faced a tumultuous five-and-a-half seasons with New York, making the playoffs only once in 2022, before succumbing to significant injuries, including an issue with his neck.

After a rough 2-8 start, he was released from the team at the close of 2024, which was two years into a four-year, $160 million contract extension. Subsequently, he joined the Vikings’ practice squad.

Joining the Colts as a free agent, Jones beat out 2023 first-round draft pick Anthony Richardson for the starting role, leading the team to a surprising 8-2 beginning.

However, things took a downturn post a Week 11 bye, as the team lost Jones to an Achilles injury in December, coinciding with a multi-game slump.

In his absence, retired quarterback Philip Rivers stepped in, but the 44-year-old was unable to secure a win in his third straight game. Consequently, the Colts wrapped up the season with an 8-9 record, failing to reach the playoffs.

Colts ownership confirmed on Monday that Ballard is set to return for his 10th season, and head coach Shane Steichen will also continue in his role.

“The first half of the season gave us a lot of encouragement,” said Colts CEO and owner Carly Irsay-Gordon. “We’ve seen considerable progress, instilling optimism about our future and direction as a team.”
