Colts make decision on Anthony Richardson at NFL trade deadline

The Colts aren't ready to permanently waive Anthony Richardson.

Last week, Colts head coach Shane Steichen benched the second-year quarterback in favor of veteran Joe Flacco for Sunday's game against the Vikings.

The NFL trade deadline passed on Tuesday, and while there was no movement on Richardson, there were reports of other teams making potential deals.

“Over the past few days, we have received multiple inquiries regarding the availability of Colts QB Anthony Richardson, who was benched last week.” ESPN Colts reporter Stephen Holder wrote about X.. “All the suitors got the same answer: He's off limits.”

Due to injuries and recent benching, Richardson has started just 10 games in the NFL.

He displayed incredible leg strength and the ability to connect deep passes, but his accuracy was lacking.

Richardson completed just 44.4 percent of his passes this season, throwing four touchdown passes and seven interceptions.

There was also a controversial moment during last week's game against the Texans when Richardson voluntarily left the game, later admitting it was the wind and not an injury.

Many people around the NFL criticized Richardson, including former quarterback Cam Newton.

“I need to get off my asshole and get ready for the next play,” Newton said. “When people decide to go with Joe Flacco, they can’t make that decision because they haven’t had the awareness or the experience to know what it’s like, because they’re the ones in charge.

“It’s no one’s job more than you to make sure you’re ready. The sign of a true professional — you have to be mentally and physically ready, folks. Anthony Richardson's situation exemplifies both.”

Despite this, Flacco also struggled as the Colts lost to the Vikings on Sunday night, averaging just 6.6 yards per pass attempt with only one touchdown and one interception.
