Colts near decision on quarterback in Daniel Jones-Anthony Richardson competition

Colts Coach Close to Deciding Starting Quarterback

Former Giants quarterback Daniel Jones is on the verge of discovering his role on the Colts as the team’s starting quarterback.

Colts head coach Shane Steichen mentioned he is “very close” to making a decision ahead of week one.

“I’ve been observing for three weeks, and I’ll be making a choice soon,” Steichen told reporters after the Colts’ 23-19 preseason loss to the Packers.

Steichen reiterated, “I’m very close,” emphasizing just how near he is to concluding the competition.

He also expressed his determination to do what he believes is best for the team, regardless of which quarterback that entails.

“It feels pretty straightforward when that decision is made,” he added. “When I finalize this, I will act in the best interest of this football team.”

Steichen’s remarks indicate an ongoing competition that has unfolded since April, featuring Jones and rookie Anthony Richardson.

In his second preseason game for the Colts, Jones started but faced challenges against the Packers, completing seven of 11 passes for 101 yards after a sluggish beginning on his first two drives.

Richardson, drafted fourth overall by the Colts in the 2023 NFL Draft, managed to complete six out of 11 passes during the same defeat.

Despite the loss, Steichen pointed out some factors that could potentially give Jones an advantage going forward.

“It’s about manipulation, communication in the huddle, and ensuring guys are aligned,” said Steichen. “Consistency is crucial in this.”

After spending six seasons with the Giants, Jones signed a one-year deal worth $14 million with the Colts back in March.
