Columbia extends negotiations to clear pro-Palestinian encampment

Columbia University announced Wednesday that it has extended negotiations with pro-Palestinian demonstrators to clear their encampment on the school’s lawn before further action is taken against them. .

The original deadline for protesters to leave was midnight Tuesday, otherwise police could have intervened to clear the camp.

However, the university announced it was extending the deadline by another 48 hours after significant progress was made in negotiations with student leaders.

According to Columbia University, organizers removed “a significant number of tents,” ensured only school personnel participated in the protests, participants complied with safety requirements, and no discriminatory language was used. He said he agreed to take measures to ensure this.

“Given this constructive dialogue, the university will continue its dialogue over the next 48 hours,” the school said.

The encampment began last Wednesday when multiple university officials were questioned during a House hearing on anti-Semitism on campus.

Chairman Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) is scheduled to visit Columbia University with Jewish students on Wednesday. Earlier this week, House Republicans from New York called on the university’s president to resign.

Protests on Columbia University’s campus have drawn bipartisan condemnation due to encampment violence and anti-Semitism.

The demonstrators say they will refuse to leave until the school agrees to divest from companies linked to Israel and the war.

In the wake of the camps, Columbia University announced this week that classes would be remote for the remainder of the semester due to safety concerns.

More than 100 students have been arrested since the camp began, and Columbia University announced it would suspend participants in the event.
