Columbia imposes penalties for Butler Library disturbances and campus occupations

On Monday, Columbia University took disciplinary action against over 70 students who participated in a tumultuous pro-Palestinian demonstration on campus a few months back, as sources disclosed to Fox News on Tuesday.

This “disturbance,” described by the university as “a mass event,” included the chaotic incident at Butler Library on May 7, along with a graduate camp event for Spring 2024, and three additional unruly happenings also in Spring 2024.

According to sources, around two-thirds of those involved have either been expelled or suspended.

The university’s Judiciary Committee, which recently shifted under the Provost’s office, made the decision after a White House-initiated task force began probing Ivy League institutions for potential anti-Semitism. This marked the first significant action since the restructuring.

Reportedly, numerous students who were just trying to study faced disruptions due to the chaos at Butler Library during exam periods, leading the university to start looking into rule violations, ultimately barring certain participants from campus and issuing temporary suspensions.

In a statement, Columbia University cited that the Judiciary Committee conducted hearings where respondents could debate their cases, eventually leading to sanctions being determined about ten weeks post-incident.

On July 21, the Judiciary Committee handed out sanctions that were decided upon by a panel comprising faculty and administrators over the summer. While individual disciplinary actions haven’t been disclosed, the repercussions for the Butler Library riots included probation, multi-year suspensions, revocation of degrees, and even expulsion.

Columbia has also seen some backlash regarding its handling of protests. A faculty group criticized the university for its library policies, framing it as a shift towards oppressive governance.

Despite the turmoil, university officials emphasize the importance of maintaining respect and noted that disruptions to academic activity are against university regulations. They insisted that such violations would lead to consequences.

In closing, the university reiterated its commitment to manage rules consistently while providing a fair resolution process for both students and the community.
