Protests Erupt at Columbia University Graduation
At least two protesters opposing Israel were arrested during Columbia University’s graduation ceremony, while the NYPD dealt with a larger group of aggressive demonstrators outside the campus.
The event, which attracted around 37,000 attendees, proceeded relatively smoothly inside the gates, but was marred by chants demanding the release of Mahmoud Khalil, a former student detained by ICE agents back in March.
Outside the gates, graduates voiced their discontent about their diplomas, chanting loudly and denouncing Israel for alleged actions in the ongoing conflict with Hamas. Law enforcement was called to the scene to restore order, although the NYPD has not confirmed who made the call for assistance at the Morningside Heights location.
Khalil has been identified as a representative of Radical Columbia University’s Apartheid Divest Group (CUAD) and faces deportation due to his purported involvement with activities related to Hamas.
Prior to the graduation, CUAD had encouraged disruption of the ceremony through social media. They urged followers to “wear a mask” and “get loud,” expressing outrage about what they termed “genocide.”
Last year’s graduation was canceled due to safety concerns following weeks of protests against Israel that engulfed the campus.
