Columnist Eugene Robinson has communicated his decision to his coworkers. Washington Post His departure from the newspaper for owner Jeff Bezos signals a “major shift” in the company’s “mission.”
“Eugene Robinson has left Washington Post according to an email he sent to the staff this morning.” New York Times Reporter Ben Mullin shared a post on X on Thursday that included an email purportedly from Robinson sent to a newspaper employee.
“Dear colleague, I wanted to inform you that I have chosen to step down from my position,” Robinson stated.
“The ‘substantial changes’ declared in our section’s missions have prompted us to conclude that it is time for the next chapter,” the Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist remarked.
“I wish nothing but the best for you. I won’t be a stranger. I follow your exceptional work daily,” Robinson noted. Washington Post has been his home for over 40 years.
The columnist’s announcement follows Bezos’ move to revamp the editorial section of the newspaper.
In February, Robinson reacted to the change during an appearance on Morning Joe MSNBC, “I believe this is the finest opinion section in American journalism.”
“I consider this a journalistic error. It may be a business decision, but it leaves us grappling with choices for our future,” he added.
As reported by Breitbart News in late October, shortly after the 2024 presidential election, Washington Post The editorial board revealed it would refrain from endorsing candidates in upcoming presidential elections.
Bezos reportedly directed this recruitment wish amid early voting patterns that seemed to favor Trump. This marked the first time in 36 years post abstained from supporting a presidential candidate, which was a setback for then President Kamala Harris.
The Amazon founder maintains several significant contracts with the U.S. government, but he also attended President Donald Trump’s inauguration in January with his fiancée, Lauren Sanchez.
