Comedian Jim Gaffigan crushed it at the Al Smith charity dinner in New York on Thursday night and broke out some brutal jokes about Vice President Kamala Harris’s notable absence.
Founded in 1945, the Al Smith dinner raises millions for Catholic charities, and since 1960, traditionally allows both presidential candidates to roast each other before Election Day. At the 2016 event, Trump famously went after his then-opponent Hillary Clinton over the WikiLeaks hack of her campaign’s emails.
In a performance reminiscent of Ricky Gervais’s legendary Golden Globes speech, Gaffigan took shots at the Democratic Party for staging a “coup” against President Joe Biden and Harris for skipping the event but still finding time to appear on “the longtime staple of campaigning,” the sex advice podcast, “Call Her Daddy.” Harris was the first presidential candidate since Walter Mondale in 1984 to not attend the event. The comedian landed a banger line on Harris following her cringe, pre-recorded video skit that apparently drew a “dismal applause.”

“As I watched that, I couldn’t help but think of, now I know what my kids felt when I Facetime’d into a piano recital they were at,” he said.
Gaffigan also roasted Trump at the dinner, but there is something thrilling about watching a more mainstream comedian like him rip the Democratic Party. We are all so used to late-night hosts and SNL actors doing their trite, anti-Trump bits for the past eight years that when the hose is turned on a liberal figure, it feels that much more satisfying and significant.
