Comedian Marc Maron claims Bill Maher struggles with a need to stay relevant.

Mark Maron’s Take on Bill Maher

On Sunday, comedian Mark Maron expressed his thoughts on Bill Maher, the host of “Real Time.” Maron described Maher’s approach as “always problematic” and mentioned a “deep pursuit of relevance” that he finds concerning.

During a conversation on the podcast “Pod Save America” with co-host John Lovett, Maron was asked about Maher’s views compared to those of other comedians. He hesitated before stating, “I can’t. I’ve always had problems with his tone.” Maron noted that while he has appeared on Maher’s show multiple times, he feels Maher is becoming increasingly “desperate” in his quest for relevance.

Discussing the challenges faced by some who are a part of the older generation, Maron remarked, “I feel like I have this in Bill. There’s a hopeless pursuit of relevance.” He emphasized how this desperation can influence one’s approach to work and personal perception.

Maron acknowledged that Maher has a talented joke writer, but still, he can’t shake off this unsettling feeling about the tone of Maher’s humor. It seems to him that there’s an element of anxiety behind the laughter.

Despite traditionally leaning liberal, Maher has gained attention recently for his critical stance on the Democratic Party and the so-called “woke” culture. In a more recent episode, he confronted Democrats for allowing Trump to effectively choose voters in the upcoming 2024 election.

Maron shared his belief that all political views should be open for discussion. However, he indicated that he doesn’t align with Maher’s approach to “woke” issues, which he finds to be somewhat at odds with his own perspective.

He also pointed out ongoing infighting on the left, suggesting that it detracts from more significant discussions. Reflecting on his experience with Air America, Maron mentioned that he preferred a more laid-back approach to comedy, one that didn’t feel forced or “charged.”
