Comedian Ray DeJong Passes Away Just Days Before 64th Birthday
Ray DeJong, a comedian based in New York City, died at the age of 63 on Monday, just one day before his birthday. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear.
Before his passing, DeJong had announced a comedy roast at the Brooklyn Comedy Club, set for July 16, to celebrate his upcoming 64th birthday.
Not only was DeJong known for his comedic talent, but he also played a significant role in opening Brooklyn’s first black-owned comedy venue. Additionally, he had interviewed notable music figures like Stevie Wonder and Alicia Keys.
The news of his death was shared by video director Ralph McDaniels, who expressed his sorrow on social media, writing, “It’s sad to announce the passing of the Video Music Box Family @raydejon…. Ray DeJong will be overlooked.” This heartfelt message resonated with many.
Evelyn Delacruz, DeJong’s sister, shared her grief on social media, expressing shock over his sudden passing and requesting privacy for the family during this challenging time. She mentioned that they would inform others about the service arrangements, stating, “We’re all totally heartbroken. His birthday is tomorrow.”
In his last social media update, DeJong encouraged his fans to purchase tickets for the comedy event he was anticipating. He emphasized his excitement for celebrating his birthday on July 15 through a shared video with his 32,000 followers.
The roast was set to feature R&B singer Jimmy Kozier, along with other comedians like Kenny Woo, Brooklyn Mike, and K. Special performances were expected from Smith and Stephanie Kay.
Earlier this year, DeJong had partnered with Kwame Clarke and Rob Jones to open the club. His profile reflected a dedication to fostering a fun and welcoming atmosphere for both comedians and audiences: “His passion for comedy is contagious and creates an atmosphere where both performers and audiences feel like they’re at home.”
After the announcement of his death, fans and fellow comedians took to social media to pay tribute. Former boxing champion Shannon Briggs expressed his sorrow with a message saying, “Damn it… I’m so sad to hear this. Please rest easy, champion.” Another comedian, Ayana Douki, commented, “I have no words…. Thank you for all the stage time and for pretending to be so many of us.”
The Harlem comedy fan page shared a tribute, noting, “New York City has lost a true giant.” Others echoed similar sentiments, remembering DeJong as a significant figure in the comedy community.
Vishnu Vaka described DeJong as one of the “kind people” in the industry. DeJong had previously faced significant health challenges, having survived a stroke and battled addiction, sharing his experiences openly to assist others struggling with similar issues.
Beyond his comedic pursuits, DeJong was committed to helping young adults with substance abuse problems, demonstrating a deep care for his community.
