Comedian takes jab at CNN’s low ratings during New Year’s Eve special

Stand-up comedian Whitney Cummings mocked CNN's low ratings during a special live broadcast on New Year's Eve.

During an appearance Tuesday night on CNN's long-running “New Year's Eve Live with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen,” Cummings joked about the cable news channel's sparse audience.

“I'm doing a show with 3,000 people right now, which is comparable to CNN's viewership these days,” the comic said on the show.

Hosts Andy Cohen of Bravo and longtime CNN anchor Anderson Cooper appeared to take Cummings' jabs well. Cooper replied with a laugh, “Good, good,” and Cohen commented, “Everyone's on fire today.”

Continuing to perform together, Cooper said that he and Cohen toured together and the crowd size at that time was similar to Cummings' tour. “3,000 people liked it,” he said.

The cartoon's joke was definitely on point for the network, which has been struggling with ratings problems and lost a ton of viewers with President-elect Donald Trump's victory.

In the two weeks following President Trump's victory, CNN recorded double-digit declines across the board in key metrics, losing 33% of total viewers compared to its 2024 average, 39% in the demo, and 39% in the demo. Time lost 36% of its already small audience.

During the first week of December, average viewership of CNN's prime-time lineup of “Anderson Cooper 360,” “The Source with Kaitlan Collins,” and “CNN NewsNight with Abby Phillip” from 8 to 11 p.m. The total number of people affected remained at 367,000. By comparison, Fox News Channel averaged 2.5 viewers. Total primetime viewers for the same period were 1 million.

These numbers placed CNN 17th among cable stations' prime-time lineups for the week. Food Network's prime-time shows gained even more viewers during the same period.

Elsewhere during the CNN appearance, Cummings accused the entertainment industry of lecturing Americans.
