Senator Mitch McConnell’s Expected Return to Senate
House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer has indicated that U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell’s staff is hopeful for his return from a lengthy hiatus due to health concerns when the Senate reconvenes on September 14.
“I expect that. I sure hope so,” Comer, a Republican from Kentucky, stated on Thursday in response to questions about McConnell’s plans after the Senate’s recess.
Although Comer hasn’t spoken directly with McConnell recently, he maintains regular communication with the senator’s staff, as both offices collaborate on various issues pertaining to their state.
“I’ve talked to his staff, many of whom are from my district originally, and they have all expressed that their goal is for Sen. McConnell to be present when the Senate gathers next week,” Comer mentioned.
When inquired about a specific date for McConnell’s return, Stephanie Penn, a spokesperson from his office, stated there are currently “no scheduling announcements.”
McConnell hasn’t cast a vote in the Senate since June 11, following his hospitalization on June 14. Initially, his staff did not reveal the exact reasons for his hospital stay. The 84-year-old senator has faced multiple notable medical incidents—particularly falls—over the years, leading to ongoing speculation about his health.
In July, McConnell transitioned from the hospital to a rehabilitation facility for recovery. It was later explained that his hospitalization resulted from a fall at home, which was complicated by contracting a mild case of pneumonia. After being discharged in early August to continue recuperating at home, McConnell expressed his desire to return to work.
“On the advice of my doctors, I’ll maintain an intensive regimen of physical therapy from home during the state work period and will continue to engage with my staff and colleagues on important Senate business,” McConnell remarked at that time.
Still, his extended absence has raised questions about his capability to fulfill his responsibilities. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear sent a letter to McConnell’s office, seeking clarification about his recovery status.
“Over the last several weeks, Kentuckians have grown increasingly concerned about your health and wellbeing, and your capability to serve in the U.S. Senate,” Beshear wrote, wishing McConnell a “safe and speedy recovery.”
When approached about McConnell’s health, President Donald Trump simply stated, “I have no idea.”
