Subpoena Issued to Former FBI Director James Comey

Former FBI Director James Comey has reportedly been served with a subpoena in relation to a federal investigation examining former U.S. intelligence officials who previously looked into President Donald Trump, according to various reports.

Comey, along with 130 other former officials, is under investigation primarily for an alleged “Grand Conspiracy.” This inquiry is focused on whether intelligence and law enforcement personnel from the Obama and Biden administrations colluded to:

  • Manipulate Intelligence: The investigation questions the validity of the 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment (ICA), which asserted that Russia interfered in the 2016 election to support Trump. Prosecutors are seeking to determine if this conclusion was artificially constructed to undermine his presidency.
  • Weaponize the Legal System: Attorney General Pam Bondi has characterized prior investigations into Trump—including the Russia inquiry and the classified documents case—as a coordinated campaign to target Republicans while protecting Democrats from similar oversight.

The investigation is being overseen by U.S. Attorney Jason Reding Quinones. Comey was subtly subpoenaed last week by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, where Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee, is managing a grand jury.

No public statement was issued by the DOJ regarding this matter, nor were any filings made available at that time.

The subpoena specifically addresses Comey’s role in creating the January 2017 ICA. This development follows a notable criminal referral last year from Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, who accused former officials from the Obama administration of engaging in a “treasonous conspiracy” aimed at destabilizing Trump’s presidency.

Since the investigation began last year, it has rapidly expanded, leading to over 130 subpoenas issued to various officials from the Obama and Biden administrations. Legal representatives for several of these individuals have noted that the inquiry is extensive, covering a timeline from the 2016 election to the present.

In addition to Comey, a federal grand jury has also subpoenaed former CIA Director John Brennan along with key FBI figures like Peter Strzok, Andrew McCabe, and Lisa Page. In response to the investigation, McCabe’s attorney has dismissed it as a “vendetta in search of a crime.”

Despite the political scrutiny surrounding the case, Bondi remains steadfast in her support of the federal grand jury’s September 2025 indictment of Comey, stating that the DOJ will pursue the facts wherever they may lead.

Bondi’s comments came as the former FBI director faced formal charges of making false statements and obstructing a congressional proceeding related to his 2020 testimony about the unauthorized sharing of sensitive information with the media.

“No one is above the law,” Bondi asserted. “Today’s indictment reflects this Department of Justice’s commitment to holding those who abuse positions of power accountable for misleading the American people.”

The investigation into Brennan revolves around allegations that he provided false testimony to Congress in May 2023 concerning the CIA’s involvement with the Steele Dossier. Since these statements were made within the past five years, they fall within the federal statute of limitations, permitting the DOJ to pursue criminal charges.

Additionally, while Comey’s earlier actions may largely be beyond legal reach due to time constraints, he remains a central target of the probe. Although a 2025 indictment linked to his 2020 Senate testimony was recently dismissed on procedural grounds, investigators are now turning their attention to his more recent actions and potential involvement in coordinated activities that occurred thereafter.
