Update on Terry McLaurin’s Situation
Cliff Kingsbury, the offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders, indicated that the unresolved situation regarding Terry McLaurin needs to be addressed within the next three weeks. This comes amidst concerns for the team’s offensive plans.
McLaurin, 29, is approaching the final year of a three-year contract he inked in 2022. He requested a trade on July 31 after discussions for a contract extension with quarterback Jayden Daniels, who relies heavily on his top target, broke down.
During a recent press conference, a reporter inquired about how much time Kingsbury and McLaurin have spent together given the latter’s limited availability.
“If he’s not fully available, we’re definitely at a disadvantage,” Kingsbury remarked. “Practicing is crucial for syncing things like timing and routes. You can’t replicate that unless you’re on the field.”
He added that it’s essential for players to be present to establish chemistry and figure out where the offensive strategy goes from here.
“This is an ongoing process,” Kingsbury noted. “We really won’t understand our potential until we get our key players back on the field. While we’ve been able to evaluate some aspects, without our top receivers, it’s hard to create that necessary synergy.”
Before he made his trade request, McLaurin had been sidelined due to an ankle injury, which hindered him from participating fully. Kingsbury emphasized that McLaurin is working with trainers at the facility but underlined the importance of practicing on the field to foster growth in their teamwork.
“Building trust and chemistry takes time, and Terry knows that entering the second year of our system is crucial,” Kingsbury mentioned. “Still, the best way to continue developing is to be out there together.”
General Manager Adam Peters expressed his support for McLaurin last month, calling him a valuable player they aim to retain, regardless of the trade discussions.
In 2024, McLaurin achieved a personal milestone, ending the season with 13 touchdowns.
The Commanders are set to face the Bengals on August 18, and they’ll wrap up the preseason against the Ravens on August 23. Their 2025 season will kick off at home against the Giants on September 7.
