The Washington Commanders fired head coach Ron Rivera on Monday, making him the second head coach to be fired in the first few hours of the offseason, according to multiple reports.
Rivera was hired as the Commanders' head coach in 2020 after nine years with the Carolina Panthers. He went 26-40-1 with Washington and led the team to the playoffs only once.

Rivera was at the helm of the team when former team owner Daniel Snyder decided to abandon the Washington Redskins name in favor of the Washington Football Team and then the Commanders. He also took over when Josh Harris bought the team from Snyder.
It's clear Harris wants a fresh start for 2024 and beyond. Rumors have been circulating about whether the team would follow in Bill Belichick's footsteps if the legendary coach parted ways with the New England Patriots.

In Rivera's final season, the team finished 4-13, one of the worst records in the NFL. However, this could give Washington a top draft pick and potentially improve their future.
Washington finished 24th in receiving yards and 25th in points.

Rivera's firing coincided with the Atlanta Falcons parting ways with Arthur Smith. There are currently five teams in need of a head coach in 2024: the Commanders, Falcons, Panthers, Las Vegas Raiders, and Los Angeles Chargers.
