The Commanders received more encouraging news about their starting quarterback than the Giants did regarding theirs.
According to general manager Adam Peters, Washington has no intention of placing Jayden Daniels on injured reserve and does not believe he requires surgery following his elbow dislocation.
“He consulted with various doctors nationwide, and we’ve gotten quite a few positive opinions. Right now, surgery isn’t a consideration, and we haven’t talked about IR,” Peters mentioned in an interview on 106.7 The Fan.
This suggests the Commanders might expect Daniels, who faced a similar injury last season, to return within a month.
After Daniels was sidelined during Sunday’s 37-20 defeat to the Cowboys, the team’s plan involved meeting with specialists before deciding on the next steps regarding his recovery.
Ian Rapaport confirmed that Daniels is week-to-week with this injury, aligning with Peters’ comments.
Last year, after suffering a similar injury in Week 9, Daniels was sidelined for just over a month and missed three games, with a bye week in between.
The Commanders, just like last season, will now turn to veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota, starting with a home game against the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Seahawks, this Sunday.
This match is particularly important for Washington, which has begun the season with consecutive losses to NFC East rivals, the Eagles and Cowboys.
Mariota stepped in during the second half against Dallas, completing 11 of 16 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown.
He played in 11 games for Washington last season as Daniels dealt with multiple injuries that temporarily hindered his career, which had shown promise after leading the Commanders to the NFC Championship game in his rookie year.
Following their game against Seattle, the Commanders are set to face the Colts, the Giants (who will be without Jaxson Dart), and the 49ers, all leading up to a Week 7 bye.
By opting not to place Daniels on injured reserve, the team seems to expect his return by the Week 6 “Monday Night Football” matchup against San Francisco.
