The Washington Commanders announced that they have released veteran kicker Brandon McManus, who was accused of sexual assault by two women while playing for the Jacksonville Jaguars last season.
McManus was expected to be the Commanders’ starting kicker this season, but the team will continue practicing on Monday without McManus on the roster.
Last month, two flight attendants filed a lawsuit alleging that McManus sexually assaulted them on a flight to London while he was with the Jaguars.

The women, whose names have not been released, allege that McManus rubbed or rubbed against them during the flight. They are also suing the Jaguars, alleging that the team did not supervise McManus and did not create a safe environment for them.
According to the lawsuit, the flight “quickly became a party” and McManus allegedly hurled $100 bills at the women in exchange for inappropriate dancing.
One woman said McManus “smirked and walked away” after she confronted him, while the other said one of his Jaguars teammates appeared ashamed of his actions when she made eye contact with him during the initial alleged assault.

McManus then attempted to kiss one of the women, according to the complaint.
According to the lawsuit, the two women allege that they suffered severe mental distress, anxiety, psychological and emotional distress, embarrassment and humiliation.
The Jaguars released a statement after the lawsuit was filed: “We are aware of the allegations and recognize their seriousness. As we continue to investigate this matter, we want to emphasize that we stand for an organization built by people who represent our community and our game with the utmost integrity and class.”

So did the commanders.
“We were made aware today of a civil lawsuit filed on May 24th against Brandon McManus. We take allegations of this nature very seriously and are investigating the matter. We have been in contact with league office and Brandon’s representatives and will not be making any further comment at this time.”
McManus’ lawyer, Brett R. Gallaway, told ESPN that his client strongly denies the allegations made by the two flight attendants.
“These are completely false and demonstrably false allegations made as part of a campaign to smear and disparage a talented and respected NFL player,” Gallaway said in a statement to ESPN. “We intend to vigorously defend Brandon’s rights and integrity and restore his reputation by showing that these allegations are, in fact, an attempt at extortion.”
