Commanders release kicker Cade York who missed 2 field goals in first game of season

Cade York's tenure in Washington was brief, as the Commanders fired the kicker after a disastrous season-opening loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The NFL is a business, and players understand that even if they are selected out of training camp to make the roster, the competition can be fierce.

York felt that way on Monday when he was sacked by the Commanders after missing two field goals in a 37-20 loss.

York, a fourth-round pick of the Cleveland Browns in the 2022 NFL Draft, missed wide right on both kickoffs from 56 and 47 yards on Sunday at Tampa Bay's Raymond James Stadium.

The Commanders were involved in a kicking contest in training camp and gave the Browns a conditional seventh-round pick to acquire York.

However, York will not be on the Commanders' roster for two games this season, so there is no need to give up the pick.

According to ESPN, Washington is already targeting York's replacement and is set to sign kicker Austin Seibert ahead of their Week 2 game against the New York Giants.

“Certainly it's not ideal, but it just goes to show you can't stay quiet if it's not right,” Commanders head coach Dan Quinn told reporters, via ESPN. “We'll get there. It's unfortunate.”

The Commanders have struggled all offseason since releasing Joey Slye in free agency.

The biggest dilemma came when Brandon McManus was fired in May after being sued by two women who said they sexually assaulted him on a flight while playing for the Jacksonville Jaguars last season.

Washington signed Ramiz Ahmed in June but was waived during training camp and then waived Riley Patterson after acquiring York in a trade.

York's tenure in Cleveland didn't last long either, making just 24 of 32 field goals during his rookie season and losing a training camp battle to Dustin Hopkins during last year's training camp.

From there, York bounced around the league, joining the Tennessee Titans practice squad before signing with the New York Giants in November 2023. The Browns re-signed him in March of this year before trading for him.
