Comment from Yankees broadcasters on Joc Pederson's struggles just before his home run

It’s quite interesting how appearances—and stats—can sometimes be misleading.

On Monday, announcer Ryan Rucco seemed to scrutinize Rangers veteran Joc Pederson. They highlighted Pederson’s challenging season just before his home run against Devin Williams, which helped the Yankees tie the game in their eventual 8-5 walk-off loss in extra innings at Globe Life Field.

“You can really see how much Joc has changed physically,” Pederson commented after he tied the game at 5-5 with a hit into right field.

At 33 years old, Pederson is now in his twelfth season and has transitioned from being a center fielder to primarily a designated hitter over the years.

Like many people in their thirties, it seems he may have added some weight over time.

His listed height is 6 feet 1 inch, weighing around 220 pounds, a number that dates back to his rookie season. There’s a Reddit post showing a slimmer version of him from his Dodgers days between 2014 and 2020, before he shifted to more of a power-hitter role recently.

Nonetheless, despite any changes in size, Pederson had a strong 2024 season with Arizona, leading to a two-year, $37 million contract with the Rangers, which is still pending resolution.

Rucco and David Kohn noted that Williams struggled during a save attempt when he faced Pederson, whose stats were less than impressive at that moment: a .126 batting average, two home runs, six RBIs, and a .473 OPS.

Corn remarked, “It’s surprising to see such numbers from Joc, especially after signing a lucrative contract to be with us.”

Rucco pointed out that Pederson had an OPS of .908 with the Diamondbacks last year, just before Williams made a critical mistake by throwing a pitch that he shouldn’t have.

“Devin Williams gives Joc Pederson an opening, and he certainly made him pay for it,” Rucco concluded.

The game wrapped up shortly after that, leaving the Yankees unable to score again, while rookie Jake Bird faced challenges, allowing a second homer in just four days.

Currently, the Yankees find themselves closely positioned for the second wild card spot, trailing the Mariners by just 1.5 games in the postseason race.
