Committee chair explains his reasons for rejecting Democrats’ taxpayer trip to El Salvador

Homeland Security Committee’s Stance on El Salvador Trip

Mark Green, the Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, recently explained his reasons for rejecting a proposed taxpayer-funded visit to El Salvador spearheaded by Congressional Democrats. This trip was centered around Kilmer Abrego Garcia, a deported member of the MS-13 gang and a documented human trafficker.

Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen from Maryland initially visited El Salvador to meet with Garcia. Following this, there were reports that other Democrats might accompany him. However, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries reportedly advised against travel plans, though his office denied these claims.

Green expressed his pride in leading a committee that has proactively addressed the Democrats’ intentions regarding the trip. He criticized their motivations, stating that they appear to be taking an anti-immigration stance by advocating for Garcia’s case. Green highlighted troubling details from Garcia’s personal life, including an incident whereby his current wife, Jennifer Vasquez Sula, sought a protective order against him in 2020, raising concerns over her safety.

Garcia was ordered to be removed from the U.S. by a federal judge in 2019 and was sent back to El Salvador earlier this year. Green noted that the judge had indicated Garcia should not be deported to El Salvador or Guatemala, although the specifics remain unclear.

As evidence of Garcia’s criminal activity mounted, Green expressed worries about the implications of allowing individuals like Garcia—potentially violent gang members—back into society.

In a hearing on Thursday, Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem reiterated to Senate Democrats that Garcia would not be allowed to return to the U.S., as he had no legal standing to do so.
