Community Mourns After Tragic Death of Young Girl
TICONDEROGA, NY – A community in mourning assembled on Tuesday following the tragic death of nine-year-old Melina Fratlin, who was reportedly murdered during a vigil.
“If this is the area where she was found, then this becomes her community,” Bridget Cruz, a local business owner who organized the vigil, shared with the crowd. “She’ll be one of us.”
Melina, who was visiting from Canada, was discovered in a shallow pond near Lake Eagle, about ten miles from the town. Authorities suggest she was lured away by her father, Luciuano Fratlin.
“As a mother, my heart was breaking from the moment that amber alert went off,” Cruz mentioned, recalling her feelings on that frantic morning.
Others echoed her sentiment. Adam Debuque, an Army veteran who settled in the area in 2011, remarked on how this incident has left the community feeling deflated. “It’s reassuring to be part of something like this,” he said. “My faith has really helped me post-service, and it’s empowering to see our community come together, especially during such divided times.”
Tabitha Farmer called the murder “heartbreaking.” She recounted hearing the police scanner that night when Melina’s father reported her missing, which prompted her and her husband to drive 45 minutes from Minerva to participate in the candlelight vigil.
“You just don’t hear about this kind of thing here,” her husband added.
An additional memorial took place at Lake Shuloon on Tuesday evening. Local resident Tonya Lafrance expressed disbelief over the actions of Melina’s father, saying, “As a parent, I can’t imagine doing that to your own child.” She described Ticonderoga as a close-knit community, noting that such a violent act has instilled fear and frustration among its residents. “It’s tough for anyone to accept this right now,” she concluded.
