A commuter on a Manhattan subway was thrown to death on Monday in an unprovoked attack by an emotionally disturbed person who threw him onto the tracks and hit him, police and sources said.
Police officials said the victim was thrown onto the tracks as the northbound No. 4 train entered the East 125th Street and Lexington Avenue station in East Harlem just before 7 p.m.
The train failed to stop in time and hit the deceased, whose identity has not been made public.
The person was pronounced dead a short time later, and the suspect, who was said to be emotionally disturbed, was taken into custody, officials said. The charge is pending.
Half of the attacks on MTA workers on subways last year involved mental illness.
A Post investigation found that 20 of the 38 people charged with 41 assaults on transit workers had psychological problems.
Many of those who assaulted workers also had criminal records.
Schober’s suspect Monday was identified by sources as Carlton McPherson.
He has a prior arrest for assault dating back to October 2023, sources told the Post. The suspect was released on bail and was scheduled to appear in court again in July.
The MTA said 4/5/6 train service was “significantly disrupted” and was diverted to other tracks as a result.
