Support for Women in Sports by LA Chargers Coaches
Coaches from the Los Angeles Chargers made a statement in support of women in sports at a recent event with a media company focused on promoting non-binary athletes.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh, along with offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel and defensive coordinator, shared a team photo on social media where they wore shirts declaring “Everyone Watches Women’s Sports.” This was highlighted on the team’s social media platforms.
During the organization’s Sports Day Women event at training camp, the shirts were part of a promotion for Togethxr, a company established by Nike alongside four prominent female athletes.
Jessica Robertson, Togethxr’s Chief Content Officer, mentioned that the group intended to celebrate the idea of a world beyond binaries, stating, “We recognize that…we are in a world without binaries.” The “X” in Togethxr symbolizes this inclusive perspective.
Togethxr has also established a significant online presence with a website dedicated to LGBTQIA+ athletes.
However, not everyone received the Chargers’ support positively. Many sports fans expressed their disdain for what they perceived as “performative” actions. One social media user remarked, “If that were true, I wouldn’t have to wear a shitty t-shirt,” while another criticized, “It’s performative and has nothing to do with Chargers football, right?”
Another response noted the low viewership numbers for women’s sports, questioning the team’s motives for their support. Comments ranged from dismissive to outright critical, with one individual labeling the initiative as “obnoxiously performative and unnecessary.” Another added, “This is pandering. Please tell me exactly when and what kind of women’s sports you watched. There’s no need for that. Just be normal.”
It’s still uncertain if the Chargers’ coaching staff was fully aware that their support was linked to an organization advocating a post-binary ideology. A similar event with Togethxr is anticipated in 2025.
As the NFL season approaches, the Chargers have not yet commented on the feedback from fans regarding their involvement in this initiative.
