Comparison of AI video tools Sora and Veo: generate videos by using only text

AI Transforming Video Creation

AI is making waves—really big ones—in video production. We’ve moved beyond just deepfakes and filters. Now, it feels like we’re stepping into a whole new world of film creativity.

Imagine this: no fancy editing software, no green screens, and honestly, you don’t even need a camera. Your keyboard serves as the director and producer. Just type what you want to see, and voilà, AI generates high-quality video clips. It’s almost as if there’s a Hollywood studio right on your laptop.

The two frontrunners in this field are Sora from OpenAI and VEO from Google. Both are accessible right now. I gave them a shot side by side, and the results? Well, you’ll have to check that out yourself.

Sora: OpenAI’s Text to Video Powerhouse

Sora integrates seamlessly with ChatGPT and the results are impressive. You could type something simple like “Golden Retriever puppy playing on the beach with a tennis ball,” and within seconds, Sora produces smooth, visually appealing clips. There’s no hassle with stock footage or complicated editing—just write your vision.

  • If you’re a ChatGPT Plus subscriber ($20/month), you can create videos lasting up to 10 seconds at 720p.
  • Want to take it further? the ChatGPT Pro plan ($200/month) allows 20-second videos in 1080p without watermarks and with quick processing.

Also, a heads-up—Microsoft has announced that Sora is now part of Bing Video Creator, effectively expanding its functionality.

VEO: Google’s Venture into AI Film Making

Now, Google’s VEO aims for a cinematic level of quality. With VEO, you can produce videos up to 60 seconds at 1080p. It’s pretty remarkable; just type a sentence and include elements like camera movements, lighting changes, and transitions. For instance, “A cat is running on a rooftop in Paris at sunset,” yields a stunning visual complete with lens flares and intricate shadows.

To use VEO, sign up for Google’s Gemini plan.

  • Pro Plan: Free for the first month, then $19.99/month. This includes basic access to VEO and a video editing tool called Flow.
  • Ultra Plan: First three months at $124.99/month (usually $249.99). This plan unlocks full VEO access along with high-quality exports and various production features.

Testing the Waters: Puppy Video Challenge

Curious about how each platform performs, I decided to have both generate videos based on the prompt “Show me a Golden Retriever puppy playing on the beach with a tennis ball.”

You can check out the videos here. My adorable puppy Bella features in both, with Sora on the right and the other on the left.

So, what did I think? Sora captured the cute details perfectly—think Bella’s floppy ears and the shimmering water. But, honestly, the physics were a bit off; the ball bounce seemed unrealistic. VEO, on the other hand, excelled in portraying action with better movement realism, though the visual details weren’t as sharp.

We’re entering a fresh era of video creation, where your imagination is the limit. No gear, no big teams, just ideas and a bit of typing. This isn’t just for marketers or content creators—it’s an exciting new way for everyone to tell stories.

This is merely the beginning.
