With Canadian federal elections scheduled for Monday, voters across the country are preparing to vote as Liberal Prime Minister Mark Carney and conservative leader Pierre Polièbre are trapped in a neck-to-neck fight. Amid escalating tensions with the US, the election has already seen a surge in early voting.

How to vote in the 2025 Canadian Federal Election

Election Canada, the independent body responsible for conducting federal elections, offers multiple pathways for eligible voters to participate.

Advance vote

Advance voting was held from April 18th to April 21st, allowing voters to vote before General Election Day. Approximately 2 million Canadians voted on the first day of advance voting, recording new daily turnout.

In total, more than 7 million Canadians – about 25% of eligible voters – voted in advance. This is an increase of 25% compared to the 2021 election. Election Canada.

Vote by mail

Voters can apply for mail-order voting, a method known as a “special voting.” Applications for mail-order voting must be submitted by April 23rd. So far, more than 75,000 Canadians have returned mail-in votes, surpassing those 6.6 lakhs in 2021.

On April 28th, the polling station will be open from 9am to 9pm local time. Voters must consult their voter information card or visit the Election Canada website to find designated polling locations.

To be eligible to vote in a federal election, you must:

  • You are over 18 on the day of election.
  • You will be registered in the election role.

On Election Day, you can register online, by phone, or directly at the polling station.

What you need to do before you go to the polling station

  • Confirm registration: Make sure you are registered to vote by visiting the Elections Canada website or by contacting the office.
  • Know the polling location: Check the Voter Information Card or the Elections Canada website to find the designated polling location.
  • Bring your identification: Acceptable forms of IDs include driver licenses, passports, or government-issued IDs that include your name and address.

As of the last week of the campaign, the latest polls show that the Liberals are leading the Conservatives at five points.
