When Nicola Packer took a pregnancy test in November 2020, she honestly didn’t believe she was pregnant. After all, the country was locked down due to the pandemic, and she was 41—closer to menopause than motherhood. Feeling unwell, she thought it was more likely just a bug. Instead of receiving care, she was told she needed to go to another hospital, so she had to stay there without an ambulance.
She brought the fetus with her but hesitated to disclose that she had taken abortion pills. She feared she might face repercussions. When the staff learned about the pills later, a midwife assured her of their commitment to her well-being, but soon, police were involved.
A uniformed officer showed up while she was still recovering from the birth, leading to her arrest. In a distressing turn of events, her phone and computer were taken as evidence. This was just the start of a four-and-a-half-year legal struggle that culminated in her giving evidence at a trial lasting two weeks.
