Conan O’Brien Critiques Comedians Focused on Anger Towards Trump
Conan O’Brien recently expressed his concerns about cartoonists who prioritize “shouting” about President Donald Trump instead of developing their comedic skills.
During an interview with the Oxford Union, O’Brien addressed Trump’s impact on the comedy scene. He pointed out that the president’s character challenges comedians, arguing that those who continually mock Trump and attack his statements may be missing a crucial point. Instead, he believes that comedians should focus on refining their craft and, ultimately, being funny.
“Some comics just go with ‘F. Trump,’ and that’s their entire act. I think you end up getting exploited by your own anger,” he remarked. “It’s as if you’re being directed into a trap, continuously shouting ‘Trump, Trump, Trump, this guy is terrible.’ You’ve compromised your most valuable asset — which is humor — and replaced it with fury.”
O’Brien urged comedians to discover the “funny” in every situation and deliver it effectively. He remarked, “People might say, ‘Things are too serious; we can’t joke.’ But if you’re a comedian, the goal is always to be funny. You just need to find a way to do it.”
He added that it’s essential to redirect that anger into something creative. “Good art is a powerful weapon against authority. If you’re just venting your rage, you lose the most effective tool in your arsenal,” he noted.
In another part of the interview, O’Brien reflected on the significant changes in the comedy landscape since he began his career.
