Conan O’Brien Prepares for Oscar Stage
Conan O’Brien is set to make a return to hosting the Oscars, and he’s emphasized his commitment to delivering humor that’s both strong and smart.
During a recent virtual press conference, he acknowledged the challenge of balancing comedy with the celebratory atmosphere of the event. “Hosting this show is a very fine line,” Conan stated. He noted the need to honor the films and the talents behind them while keeping the humor light enough to avoid anger or political commentary.
This approach leads Conan to a significant choice—steering clear of jokes about former President Trump. In an interview on The New Yorker Radio Hour, he expressed that Trump’s reality is beyond the realm of comedy. “When comedians shift to anger instead of wit, it just doesn’t resonate,” he explained, advocating for a more thoughtful style of humor.
The care he puts into crafting his material is notable. He mentioned testing a joke related to a Best Picture nomination, only to realize it wasn’t well-received and decided to scrap it. “Sympathetic applause doesn’t work,” he quipped on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, showcasing his meticulous attention to his monologue’s effectiveness.
Yet, hosting the Oscars is more than just a comedic endeavor for Conan. He shared the personal significance of returning to the stage, recalling how watching the awards with his late father deepened his emotional connection to the event. It’s this history that gives the Oscars a unique importance for him.
Conan also highlighted an upcoming tribute to filmmaker Rob Reiner during the ceremony, which he described as “very powerful,” indicating that he aims to balance heartfelt moments with humor throughout the show.
As Conan prepares for the big night, he hopes this year’s Oscars will reflect his experience and precision as a late-night host, spotlighting the films while ensuring laughter remains a key component.
