Concerned lecturer laments 'white supremacy' as MAGA-racist accusation backfires

Accusations of Racism at Indiana University

An Indiana University lecturer has raised concerns of racism against the university following an investigation into his classroom conduct. The lecturer, who sports a nose ring, was scrutinized for allegedly using what a student described as “MAGA racist slurs” during his classes.

At a recent rally organized by the local chapter of the American Association of University Professors, lecturer Jessica Adams claimed she was barred from teaching and contacting students in her master’s program focused on “Diversity, Human Rights, and Social Justice.” This restriction came after a student filed a complaint regarding a graphic that suggested the “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) slogan may represent a type of “secret white supremacy.”

Adams expressed, “I feel like white supremacy is really on full display in the way my case was handled.” According to a graphic she provided, various concepts are also labeled as “secret white supremacy,” including:

  • “Bootstrap Theory,” which posits that individuals can achieve success solely through their own efforts.
  • Anti-immigration policies.
  • Paternalistic attitudes.
  • A curriculum centered around European perspectives.
  • Initiatives promoting English as the sole language.
  • Police violence against non-white individuals.
  • Denying the existence of white privilege.
  • Denial of systemic racism.
  • Celebrating Columbus Day.
  • Fear of people of color.
  • Expecting people of color to educate white individuals.
  • Color blindness as a perspective.
  • The notion that “we are just a family of humans.”

Adams placed the MAGA slogan just below the dividing line between “covert” and “overt” white supremacy, the latter including extremist groups like neo-Nazis and the KKK.

During her statements, Adams mentioned that the initial complaint was directed to the office of Indiana Republican Senator Jim Banks, claiming the student objected to what they perceived as left-wing propaganda. However, Dean Kalea Benner later filed a formal complaint, alleging that Adams had presented biased information as if it were factual.

Adams, identifying as white, suggested the dean’s questioning of her pyramid’s accuracy was racially motivated. She stated, “Assumptions that are not grounded in evidence are rooted in an ideology of human supremacy.” She continued, “It feels like white supremacy is really evident in how they handled my case.”

Additionally, Adams noted that the Critical Race Theory Pyramid is a recognized tool among leftist organizations like the National Education Association for combating racism and oppression. A letter from university officials mentioned potential violations of Indiana’s intellectual diversity law concerning her approach.

This law, enacted last year, promotes intellectual diversity on campus, requiring faculty to avoid exposing students to outside political or ideological views unless relevant to their academic discipline. Despite this, Adams defended her teaching methods, claiming discussions about structural racism inevitably involve examining white supremacy.

Although she was removed from one class, Adams continues to instruct three other courses at the university. She could face various disciplinary actions according to IU regulations, which may include written reprimands or even termination.

As of now, IU representatives have chosen not to comment on personnel matters specifically related to this case, and the office of Senator Banks did not respond to requests for statements.
