Patriots’ Quarterback Struggles in Season Opener
The anticipated improvements in the second year for the Patriots quarterback felt more like a small step rather than a leap.
In a tough season debut on Sunday, the quarterback finished with a 20-13 loss at home, completing 30 of 46 passes for 287 yards, resulting in one touchdown and one interception.
He managed to lead the team to a touchdown on his second possession, followed by two scoring drives that resulted in field goals over the next three quarters.
“What I saw today was a lot of inconsistency from him,” said Greg Bedard of the Boston Sports Journal on 98.5. “On that first throw to Demario Douglas, he was wide open, but the throw missed. There were a good six or seven open receivers throughout the game that he just couldn’t connect with.”
Bedard noted that it wasn’t just about his mechanics; he expressed doubts about the quarterback’s development since last year.
Entering the season, there was optimism surrounding the quarterback, especially after a rough 2024 season where he showed flashes of potential despite facing challenges with a limited roster.
As the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, he ended that season with 10 interceptions and 15 touchdowns, but many believed that with a new coaching staff and improved support around him, a breakout year was possible.
However, despite this initial hope, his performance in the first week fell flat.
The quarterback missed a critical opportunity with Douglas on the first offensive play, which certainly set a negative tone for the day.
During the second half, the Patriots, trailing 10-7, struggled significantly, punting on their next four drives. They only managed to add a field goal later on to wrap up the score.
Evaluations from NBC Boston were quite harsh, with grades ranging from C+ to D+ for his performance.
“He was clearly overmatched today,” commented Tom Curran from NBC. “There were moments of potential, sure, but overall it was disappointing for someone picked third overall. His composure needs work.”
The quarterback acknowledged both his successes and shortcomings, vowing to improve.
Coach Mike Vrabel stated that young players often need to understand they won’t always deliver a standout performance.
Looking ahead, the quarterback aims to bounce back in Week 2 against the Dolphins. “I think he sometimes strives for perfection, and that can be a burden. We all need to push through these moments. Accuracy is key, but no one is perfect,” Vrabel emphasized.
