The Social Security Agency (SSA) has outlined the payment schedule for September 2025. This plan aims to ensure that millions of beneficiaries across the U.S. receive their benefits in a smooth and organized manner.
Payment dates depend on the type of benefit—like Retirement, SSI, SSDI, and others—along with various individual factors that affect each recipient. Federal holidays also factor into the timing. So, let’s take a look at the expected payment dates for September 2025.
Overview of the September Social Security Calendar
First up is the Supplementary Security Income (SSI) Program, which assists seniors, disabled individuals, and those with low income; these payments will be prioritized and made on the first day of each month.
Initially, the payments for September were set for Monday, September 1st. However, this date happens to fall on Labor Day, a federal holiday when government offices are closed. Following protocol, the SSA adjusts payment dates that clash with weekends or holidays.
As a result, the SSI payment for September 2025 will occur earlier, on Friday, August 29th, 2025. This advance is intended to help beneficiaries access their funds ahead of the long weekend, preventing any delays.
Benefits of Social Security and SSDI
Now, when it comes to Retirement benefits and SSDI payments, a different schedule applies, largely depending on the recipient’s birth date. Those born from the 1st to the 10th of any month will see their payments on the second Wednesday of September, which is September 10th.
For beneficiaries born between the 11th and 20th, the payment date shifts to the third Wednesday, which is September 17th. Lastly, those born from the 21st to the end of the month will receive their payments on the fourth Wednesday, set for September 24th.
There is, however, one exception.
If you started receiving benefits before May 1997, your September payments will be the same date as those receiving Social Security and SSI benefits. For this group, the payment is scheduled for Wednesday, September 3, 2025, regardless of birth date. Disability benefit recipients collecting SSI will also get their payments on September 3rd.
SSA Benefit Amounts
How much individuals receive is calculated based on their work history and the contributions made. The maximum benefit for disabled beneficiaries in 2025 is equivalent to that for retirement, averaging around $4,018 monthly for those with the highest taxable income during their careers.
For survivors—like spouses, children, or dependents—the payment schedule mirrors that of the deceased workers who contributed to the system. Payments will be disbursed on September 3rd, 10th, 17th, or 24th, 2025, with amounts varying based on the recipient’s relationship to the deceased and their contribution history.
An important component of this system is the cost of living adjustment (COLA). In 2025, the SSA has implemented a 2.5% COLA, which boosts the value of all benefits. This annual increase aims to combat the effects of inflation, helping to preserve the purchasing power of the funds recipients receive. Though, experts do caution that, the increment may not suffice, but that’s a whole other discussion.
This adjustment impacts the maximum benefits as well. Thanks to the 2025 COLA, the maximum for SSI beneficiaries is now $967 per month, while qualified couples can receive up to $1,450. For retirement, the amounts are $4,018 at full retirement age, increasing to $5,108 for those who delay benefits until age 70.
