Congress is voting on whether to reauthorize Section 702 of FISA, which comes from the Patriot Act. The reauthorization would allow the FBI to secretly spy on Americans without a warrant.
“I remember thinking all they had to do was change the meaning of terrorist,” says Glenn Beck, recalling the passage of the Patriot Act. “If they decide that a group of Americans are terrorists, we’re done. And that’s exactly what they’ve done now.”
“We cannot allow Section 702 to pass,” he continued, “we have given all the keys to us to the government, and the government has turned against many Americans. He is acting in a similar manner,” he added.
Chip Roy is one of the lawmakers fighting against it, introducing a bill that includes an amendment that would add Fourth Amendment protections. He believes it “still has a chance of passing,” but that doesn’t seem likely because “the speaker has put his finger on the scale.”
Thomas Massey is also fighting that reauthorization.
Massey said the “biggest red flag” is that the bill has carve-outs for lawmakers.
“If the FBI is using FISA to monitor you, they’re going to access this database and search your name, and you’re a member of Congress, and they’re doing it ostensibly for their own benefit. They’re doing it because they’re concerned about foreign actors.” — They have to notify you, but that’s only if you’re a member of Congress or if you’re a senator or a U.S. representative. ,” explains Massey.
This notice applies only to sitting members, not candidates.
“My solution here is just to get a warrant so we don’t have to have a carve-out for lawmakers,” Massey says.
