Democrats Boycott D.C. Restaurants Supporting Unionization

Over 50 Democratic lawmakers are participating in a boycott of six well-known restaurants in Washington, D.C., as reported by Axios. This action is part of an ongoing effort to support unionization initiatives led by labor unions, including Unite Here and Local 25.

The goal of the boycott is to stand in solidarity with hospitality workers—more than 7,500 of whom are working in the D.C. metropolitan area—who are seeking to organize. The affected restaurants include Rudipromates, Osteria Mozza, Lasica, Modena, Bombay Club, and Occidental. Details of the boycott were outlined in a pledge obtained by Axios.

The pledge encourages D.C. patrons to refrain from dining at these establishments. It states, “Workers are asking D.C. customers to boycott these restaurants and ask the public not to eat, meet, or drink at these locations.”

Notable Democrats backing the boycott include former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Independent Senator Bernie Sanders has also voiced his support.

Democratic Representative Greg Cassal, who leads the Congressional Progressive Caucus, remarked on the importance of demonstrating specific actions alongside broader policy discussions.

This initiative aligns with the Democrats’ broader strategy ahead of the 2024 elections, as they aim to reconnect with working-class voters who have shifted their support toward Republican candidates. The Democratic opposition research group, American Bridge, launched the “Working Class Project” across 20 states, responding to recent feedback indicating negative perceptions of the party from these voters.

Additionally, the House Majority PAC has committed around $50 million to outreach efforts targeting working-class demographics that have distanced themselves from the party. Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin emphasized that the core issues and policies held by Democrats are valid but that there’s room for improvement in messaging and branding.
