Rep. Vern Buchanan Announces Retirement

Representative Vern Buchanan, a Republican from Florida, has announced he will not pursue re-election this year. Serving currently as the ranking member of the House Ways and Means Committee, he has been a significant figure in shaping national policy.

Buchanan has been recognized as the “architect” of various national initiatives, especially during his time as vice chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, which oversees important areas like tax, trade, and healthcare policies.

If he resigns at the end of his term, he will conclude a notable 20-year career, making him the longest-serving representative from Southwest Florida.

In a statement, the 74-year-old described his choice as a natural progression following two decades of public service. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to represent his constituents.

“It has been the honor of my life to serve the people of Southwest Florida,” said Buchanan. “After 20 years of service, I believe it is the right time to pass the torch and begin a new chapter in my life.”

Buchanan is not only a politician but also a successful businessman and previously led the Florida Chamber of Commerce. He has been part of Congress since 2007.

Over his two decades in office, he has seen 51 of his legislative proposals signed into law by four presidents spanning both political parties: George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden.

As vice chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, he held considerable sway over federal budgeting and health care policies. Some of his notable legislative achievements include:

  • Tax reform: Instrumental in shaping the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, which represented the most significant tax overhaul in over three decades, aiming to enhance America’s competitiveness and incentivize companies to operate domestically.
  • Trade: Collaborated with the White House to execute the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, which replaced NAFTA and introduced protections for key industries like steel and auto manufacturing.
  • Veteran Affairs: Secured funding for the National Veterans Cemetery in Sarasota and advocated for bipartisan legislation to simplify the verification of military service for veterans.
  • Animal Welfare: Championed the Prevention of Animal Cruelty and Torture Act, marking a pivotal change by making severe animal cruelty a federal felony for the first time in the U.S.

His announcement has taken many by surprise, especially since he received an endorsement from Donald Trump for re-election just three months prior. Some critics within conservative circles have welcomed his decision, labeling him a “RINO” (Republican in Name Only).

With Florida gearing up to redraw its congressional district maps, Buchanan’s open seat is likely to spark a competitive Republican primary, despite potential changes to district boundaries.

Buchanan’s decision places him among approximately 27 House Republicans who will not seek re-election in 2026, and he will remain in office until January 2027.
