Tragic Incident Involving Rep. Tony Gonzalez’s Former Aide
Rep. Tony Gonzalez (R-Texas) is under scrutiny following allegations of an affair with a senior aide. The situation escalated tragically when the aide, Regina Santos Aviles, set herself on fire.
On September 13, 35-year-old Regina Santos Aviles, who previously served as a regional district director for Gonzalez, lost her life in an act of self-immolation at her home in Uvalde, Texas. Her family has insisted that the incident was not an intentional act. Authorities, however, have been careful with their statements, indicating there’s no suspicion of foul play.
Uvalde Police mentioned that they do not suspect anyone else was involved in the incident. Despite the circumstances surrounding the fire, her family asserts her death was accidental. Surveillance footage revealed that Santos Aviles was alone during the tragic event.
Reportedly, her final words were, “I don’t want to die.” She is survived by her husband, from whom she was separated, and their 8-year-old son. Sources, as noted by the media, revealed that she and Gonzalez became romantically involved after she joined his staff in late 2021, although a spokesperson for him refrained from confirming the affair when asked.
“Regina Aviles was a kind-hearted person who significantly impacted her community,” stated a spokesperson for Gonzalez. “It’s disheartening to witness the political landscape manipulate the narrative surrounding her passing. Tony Gonzalez remains committed to his work for Texas and disapproves of any exploitation of this tragedy.”
Meanwhile, it has been reported that Gonzalez, a married father of six, did not attend Aviles’ funeral on September 25. Sources have also indicated that her husband, Adrian Aviles, was informed of the situation shortly after her death.
Adrian Aviles, who runs a video surveillance company, had previously set up cameras at their home, which captured moments leading up to the fire. The Uvalde Police have submitted this footage to the Texas Department of Public Safety Crime Lab for further investigation.
“Regina Santos Aviles was alone in the backyard when the fire erupted and sustained serious injuries,” the Uvalde Police stated. “Currently, there’s no evidence to suggest involvement from others.”
Recently, the Uvalde Police Department has withheld certain public records related to Regina’s death, explaining that they are seeking to seal 911 calls, surveillance footage, and police reports. This has raised eyebrows, as it contrasts with standard procedures in ongoing investigations.
