Calls for Military Support in Washington, D.C.
Rep. Wesley Hunt, a Republican from Texas, has voiced strong criticism against Democrats and the media over the surge in crime in Washington, D.C. He supports the idea of deploying the National Guard to address the situation, which he believes has gotten out of hand.
Hunt recounted a personal experience that highlighted the dangers he sees in the city. He mentioned a theft incident that occurred in his apartment complex in the Navy Yard area, where a woman had her belongings—like her computer and phone—stolen right in front of a front desk attendant. “I was only three cars away from the Capitol when it happened,” he said. He expressed confusion about the critics who downplay the safety concerns, insisting that the environment is simply unsafe.
Trump’s decision to involve the military has sparked considerable backlash from some Democrats, including House Judiciary Committee’s ranking member Jamie Raskin, who recently introduced a resolution aimed at stopping the president from keeping military personnel in the district.
Because D.C. is not a state, Trump is able to use certain provisions under the District of Columbia Home Rule Act, allowing him to deploy federal resources in response to what he deems a public emergency. Trump stated, “Before the crime and chaos, D.C. was the most beautiful capital in the world. It will return to that.”
Hunt contrasted the situation in D.C. with actions taken by some Democratic governors, noting that Tim Walz used National Guard forces to enforce COVID restrictions, a use he finds misplaced amidst the rising crime levels. Hunt questioned why, during ongoing safety crises, state leaders wouldn’t take more proactive measures to protect their citizens.
On the other hand, the White House has bragged about the effectiveness of its military strategy. Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt pointed out that recent operations led to numerous arrests, claiming they significantly impacted crime in the capital.
Amidst these developments, some local residents have expressed that the military presence has contributed to a safer environment. A Capitol Hill staff member noted that areas like Navy Yard and U Street feel noticeably improved in terms of safety since the National Guard’s involvement.
