Congressman’s House floor speech goes viral after son makes silly faces in background

A lawmaker’s son caused a stir on the House floor on Monday after he was seen making funny expressions in the background while his father was speaking.

Rep. John Rhodes, R-Tenn., and his 6-year-old son, Guy, appeared on “Fox & Friends” on Tuesday in response to the incident.

“When I asked Sam to smile, that was not at all what I expected. I thought his 3-year-old brother, who was at home with his mother, might be happy to see Guy on TV,” Rose told Steve Doocy.

Rose explained that his son recently graduated from kindergarten and that he is trying to share childcare responsibilities with his wife, Chelsea, who also works full time, and that he brought his son to work this week.

His remarks on Monday focused on the reaction to former President Trump’s conviction, which he called a “setback” for the entire country.

“Regardless of one’s opinion of the current Republican candidate, it would be useful to remember this country’s long and cherished tradition of resolving political differences at the ballot box,” he said.

However, viewers were quickly distracted by Guy in the background, and few heard what he said.

“Guy, your dad put you in that chair so you could be on TV, and you were on TV,” Doocy said, “and now we’re looking at you… what are you doing?”

“I was making the symbol to make my brother laugh,” Guy replied, explaining that he was trying to spell out his brother’s name.

Mr Guy also said his father’s parliamentary job was “boring”.

“It’s actually a very interesting job,” Rose said. “I’ve learned a lot, including from the constituents that I represent.”

“He’s not telling the truth,” Guy muttered under his breath.

“I definitely took a long nap yesterday,” Rose said. “I don’t usually get to do that.”

When asked by Doocy if there was anything else he wanted to say to viewers, Guy replied, “Nothing in particular.”

“Does anybody want to say hi?” Doocy asked, to which laughter could be heard off-camera.

“Not at all,” Guy replied.
