Mother Accused of Poisoning Husband Amid Custody Battle

A mother from Connecticut has been accused of poisoning her estranged husband with antifreeze, amid a heated custody dispute over their children.

Kristen Hogan, 33, was arrested in Ridgefield on Friday and faces two counts of attempted murder, along with a charge of interfering with police, according to state police reports.

Hogan allegedly contaminated wine and iced tea with ethylene glycol, a key ingredient in antifreeze, at her husband’s residence.

On August 10, her husband consumed a small amount of wine from the fridge. Soon after, he fell violently ill, realizing something wasn’t right.

The next day, after vomiting and feeling unwell, he reached out to his father, who suggested having his mother check on him.

Upon her arrival, she discovered he was severely ill and quickly took him to the hospital.

Initially suspected of having a stroke, doctors later diagnosed him with ethylene glycol poisoning after further observation. He was admitted to the ICU for kidney failure and mentioned to medical staff that he drank wine before his symptoms arose.

The wine had been opened just five days prior while hosting guests for dinner and was subsequently recorked and refrigerated.

After consulting with a detective, the husband expressed his belief that Hogan had poisoned the wine on a day she was scheduled to visit him.

While in court, he received a notification indicating that Hogan’s phone was accessing his Wi-Fi, raising more concerns.

According to him, Hogan had unrestricted access to his home, which added to his worries.

He told investigators that he hadn’t been in the house before drinking the wine.

During her initial police interrogation, Hogan denied any involvement.

The detective seized the wine, which was later tested and confirmed to contain ethylene glycol.

Further investigation revealed that Hogan’s phone had searches related to various toxic substances, including “potassium cyanide” and “monoethylene glycol.” When questioned about these searches, she stated that she might have mixed up the chemicals after hearing the term cyanide on a TV show.

She admitted to buying monoethylene glycol in late July but insisted it was intended for cleaning carpets at her mother’s home.

When pressed about her husband’s positive test for ethylene glycol, she dismissed the notion of having a wine problem.

Eventually, Hogan admitted to adding the toxic substance to her husband’s wine, claiming she did not intend to kill him but wanted to make him ill as a form of mental retaliation.

She stated she was unsure of the quantity she added, but insisted it wasn’t a lot, just that she poured some into the drink.

The investigating officer informed her that their child might have unwittingly ingested the poison as well.

In late September, their child was hospitalized with symptoms similar to the husband’s.

Hogan asserted that it was merely wine and iced tea, insisting no one knew it had been tampered with.

Her estranged husband believes her motive stemmed from a desire to gain ownership of his home and secure full custody of their children.

Currently, Hogan is being held on a $1 million bond.
