Connecticut Sun rout Indiana Fever to spoil Caitlin Clark’s WNBA debut

The Connecticut Sun spoiled Tuesday night, beating the Indiana Fever by double digits. Caitlin Clark makes WNBA debut In front of a historic sellout crowd on the league’s opening night of the season.

Closely guarded by the Sun’s DeJonai Carrington, Clark was scoreless in the first quarter, but made 2 of 7 field goals (including 1 of 4 from deep) in the first half. He helped the Sun with no rebounds, one assist, and five turnovers. to maintain a double-digit lead.

“We don’t have a lot of practice time for the next tournament,” Sides said of Indiana’s quick response, which hosts the New York Liberty on Thursday night.

“Tomorrow I’m going to watch a lot of video in the gym and figure out how to not turn the ball over 25 times to get 29 points.”

Clark’s struggles were evident early on, but he managed to adjust in the second half and finished with a team-high 20 points.

Clark said after the loss, “I thought we were OK the first few possessions, but then our opponent started running and we really struggled to score.” “We really couldn’t go into too much depth.”

Clark attributed the high attrition rate to the physicality of the sun and her “uncharacteristic” moments.

“I think when you have 25 turnovers overall, it’s going to be very difficult for us to win.”

Despite the loss and slow start, Clark’s popularity in the WNBA continues.

Nearly 9,000 fans cheered when Clark’s name was called on the court. The Suns announced Tuesday’s game will be the first time the home opener has had a full house since the franchise’s first year in 2003.

Clark’s first touch of the game drew a similar cheer that rivaled that of the home crowd at Mohegan Sun Arena.

Tuesday was the second sold-out game for Clark in his professional career. In his preseason debut against the Dallas Wings earlier this month, Clark dropped a team-high 21 points in front of a packed arena.

Clark took the court for the first time last week at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, drawing a record crowd of 13,028. This is a franchise record and more than triple last season’s 4,000.

Indiana opens the season Thursday at home against Liberty at 7 p.m. ET.
