Marina Mabry requested trade from Connecticut, Reported by ESPN's Alexa Phillippou Wednesday evening. The news isn't shocking given her stated desire to play for the candidate, but even so, it creates another obstacle for the Sun to move forward. If she is actually traded, it will be her fifth trade in WNBA career.
Mabrey, the 28-year-old guard, averaged 14.4 points and 4.1 assists per game last season. She was traded to the Connecticut Sun from Chicago skies mid-year, and was an integral part of the Sun's postseason run. She shot 42.4% from three innings in 16 regular season games after the trade, helping Connecticut enter the WNBA Finals game. For her career, she is a 36.5% shooter game and prefers scoring to a critical range.

However, there are no more teams that Mabrey was excited to join in July. Alyssa Thomas is traded with Phoenix Mercury, Dewana Bonner lands with Indiana Fever and free agents, Dihony Carrington and Ty Harris via trade alongside the Dallas Wings, and Veronica Burton expands draft was selected by the Golden State Valkyrie. . The only rotating player spins is ahead of Olivia Nelson-Ododa, who averaged 3.4 points in 11.8 minutes per game last season.
So, if Mabray returned to Connecticut, she quickly became one of the main scoring options for the Sun. However, the current roster does not appear to be set for postseason success. Currently on the 2025 contracts, Mabray, Natasha Cloud, Tina Charles, Lindsay Allen, Diamond Deshield, Jacee Sheldon, Cait Limbikkul, Mia Holling Shed, Robin Parks and Olivia Nelson Doda.
However, Mabrey agent Fam's Marcus Crenshaw told ESPN he wanted Mabrey to play elsewhere before the 2025 season.
Mabrey played for four teams over six years. WNBA Career – and she has been traded four times. She was drafted in the second round by the Los Angeles Sparks in 2019, but was traded for Dallas' wings before the 2020 season. Then in 2023 she was traded for Dallas' Wings, where she spent a season before being traded to the Chicago skies.
Perhaps the Sun wants younger pieces and some picks in exchange for a sharp shooter. But they have also just signed 36-year-old veteran Tina Charles, the second-leading scorer in WNBA history, and are not fully headed for rebuilding. So we still can't see exactly which direction we'll go.
