Jets Suspend Hellebuyck as Trade Request Looms

Connor Hellebuyck has been suspended by the Winnipeg Jets, marking the latest chapter in the ongoing tension between the star goalie and the NHL team.

The suspension follows Hellebuyck’s failure to report to training camp this week, with the announcement made on Wednesday. Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff is expected to discuss the situation when he speaks to reporters on Thursday.

Earlier this summer, Hellebuyck, a gold medal-winning goalie, openly asked for a trade from Winnipeg through his agent, Ray Petkau. He expressed that he had been trying to navigate the situation quietly, allowing the organization to explore its options.

“With training camp approaching, I felt it was important to publicly confirm my request,” he stated in August. “My position has not changed, and I believe moving on is the best path forward for me and my family.” He added that he appreciates the support from Jets fans and hopes for a prompt resolution.

Now, at 33 years old, Hellebuyck is in the third year of a seven-year contract and was supposed to join five other goaltenders at camp. He made headlines last season when he criticized the organization for not making the playoffs and questioned its ability to construct a winning team.

“For me, it’s winning a Stanley Cup. That’s my goal, and that’s all I have left,” he noted back in April, emphasizing that he’s not playing for money or fame, but for the joy of the game and the chance to win a championship.

The developments in Hellebuyck’s situation are likely to unfold over the next few days. If he remains suspended when the regular season begins, he will forfeit his $8.5 million salary until he is reinstated. Interestingly, if the suspension carries into the season, his contract won’t count against the salary cap.
