Connor Hellebuyck shares his initial thoughts following the surprising trade to the Devils.

Toward the conclusion of his press conference on Saturday, Connor Hellebuyck addressed inquiries regarding his familiarity with New Jersey, cherished Olympic recollections, and the role he can play as a key contributor to the Devils’ core.

When asked about his message to Winnipeg fans after spending eleven seasons with the Jets and experiencing a turbulent departure, which culminated in a dramatic trade to New Jersey on Friday—where the Jets received forwards Dawson Mercer and Nick Bjugstad, goalie Nico Daws, Alexander Command, a 2027 seventh-round draft pick, and a 2029 second-round pick—Hellebuyck responded thoughtfully.

Although he requested a trade during the offseason and missed training camp, leading to a suspension by the Jets, he expressed a hope that fans understand he still cares about them. However, he chose to delay further comments for another time.

“Honestly, there’s a lot,” he mentioned regarding his feelings toward the Jets. “But with the Heritage Game approaching, I think it’s respectful to postpone that discussion until later.” Hellebuyck noted his introduction as a Devil, complemented by recognition of an ongoing NHL season often associated with significant trades like his and Dylan Larkin’s in Detroit.

Despite ongoing speculation about a potential return to Winnipeg following his suspension, a trade seemed inevitable. Now in New Jersey, Hellebuyck—joining the ranks of notable goalies like Martin Brodeur—believes he won’t take long to acclimate and get back into game shape after not playing since last season ended.

Reflecting on his time away from play, Hellebuyck mentioned that being sidelined while others competed was challenging for him. His enthusiasm was evident as he discussed the fresh beginning he anticipates, including reuniting with Jack Hughes, a standout from Team USA, who scored a memorable game-winning goal in Milan.

Moving forward, Hellebuyck aims to address what has been viewed as one of the Devils’ most pressing weaknesses and is eager to assist in their pursuit of a significant playoff run, joining a talented lineup featuring Hughes, Nico Hischier, Timo Meier, and Jesper Bratt.

“This is a perfect match for where I am in my career,” Hellebuyck stated. “I’m focused on winning, and the only thing missing from my resume is a Stanley Cup. Knowing that these guys share a similar vision boosts my excitement for what’s ahead.”
