NHL Trade Shakes Up Goalie Landscape
The NHL made headlines on Friday with a significant trade involving Connor Hellebuyck, a three-time Vezina Trophy winner and Olympic gold medalist. The Winnipeg Jets sent Hellebuyck to the New Jersey Devils, a move that caught many off guard.
Hellebuyck, who requested a trade during the summer, hasn’t played this season yet, but now he’s preparing to lace up his skates in New Jersey. He spoke with local media for the first time, expressing his eagerness to get back on the ice.
“Sitting at home for so long was getting to me,” he reflected on Saturday. “For myself, I’m just really excited to play hockey again. I’m joining a very skilled group. They brought me for a certain specific role. I’m really excited to fill that role, not only on the ice but off the ice as well.”
As for the Devils, they started the season strong, boasting a 7-4-0 record following a recent victory over the Los Angeles Kings, where goalie Jake Allen stepped up. With Hellebuyck now in the mix, teams may find it increasingly difficult to score against New Jersey.
Hellebuyck did mention that playing in New Jersey will be different from his time in Winnipeg, and he reflected on the differences between the two markets. “I mean, it’s a catch-22; some people love that,” he said, commenting on the challenges of being recognized while out grocery shopping. “Sometimes you just want to be left alone. Canada loves their hockey, and I felt that to the bone; I loved my time there. I made a lot of good friends and built good relationships.”
“So, I can’t say that one is better than the other,” he continued. “I know that I’ve enjoyed both and experienced both. It’s just one of those things that’s part of hockey culture… they love their hockey, and we love our hockey in our own way, and that should be celebrated.”
His comments were diplomatically thoughtful, and it will be interesting to see how he adapts in New Jersey over the coming weeks, especially when the Devils have a matchup in Winnipeg on November 10.
