Connor Stalions’ debut as acting head coach ends in 60-point blowout

Connor Stallions' first game as Mumford High School's defensive coordinator ended in a 41-point loss.

And his second game came as an acting coach after head coach William McMichael suffered a stroke. According to the Detroit News — Things didn't get any better as Detroit Mumford suffered a shutout loss to Hamady High School, 60-0, on Friday.

“Success doesn't happen overnight and the first three or four teams we play are playoff teams, so we have a forward-thinking schedule,” Stallions told The Detroit News after the game. “It's not an excuse by any means, but we know we have a tough start to the year and it's important that our players embrace the process.”

The Stallions hired Munford for the defensive coordinator job last month after he resigned as an analyst at Michigan last year after being accused of orchestrating a complicated sign-stealing scandal, but McMichael said at the time “The most hated man in college football right now.”

Mumford won just one game last season.

ESPN reported that McMichael suffered a “mild stroke.” Reportedwas unable to coach Friday's game, so the Stallions took over, but things quickly became dire as Hamady gave them a quick lead with a 63-yard touchdown run on the second attempt, according to the Detroit News.

The gap only grew from there, with the outlet adding that the Stallions' fourth-down decision-making (Mumford was 0-for-6, including a reported fourth-down 20-yard attempt from his own 30-yard line) was also being called into question.

“I came to Mumford because I wanted to help change the culture,” Stallions told The Detroit News after the game. “They're not used to winning. I wanted to show them the actual process of what it takes to win, because ultimately they're going to win. To me, that's more gratifying than going to a program that's already winning.”

The Stallions' coaching performance was also criticized by Rece Davis on ESPN's “College GameDay,” with the host saying he “didn't have all the signs” regarding the Michigan scandal.

Mumford will face Cass Technical High School next week looking for its first win, but it is unclear at this point if Stallions will continue as interim coach or if McMichael will return.
