Conor McGregor’s Presidential Petition

Conor McGregor has initiated a petition aimed at allowing him to participate in the Irish presidential elections without needing nominations from other politicians, as he announced in a recent online post.

The mixed martial arts fighter is rallying support from Irish citizens and the diaspora to change the nomination process, seeking to have his name on the ballot. His verified account on social media shared details about the petition on Monday.

“Currently, candidates must obtain nominations from 20 members of the Oireachtas or four local councils to be eligible for the presidential vote,” McGregor explained. “While this system aims to maintain some political oversight, it inadvertently restricts the direct voice of Irish voters.”

The Irish Constitution outlines three pathways for presidential nominations, according to the Irish Election Commission. Candidates can be proposed by at least 20 members of the Oireachtas or by four local councils. Those who have previously served as president can directly proceed to candidacy.

“I believe that Irish citizens, both at home and abroad, should have an unimpeded right to choose who appears on the presidential ballot,” McGregor stated. “Your support will help promote a more inclusive and democratic electoral process, enabling the Irish people to shape their own future.”

As of now, over 3,000 individuals have signed the petition.

McGregor announced his intention to run for president in March 2025, citing concerns regarding mass migration and the European Union’s asylum agreements. Additionally, he recently made headlines after the Irish Court of Appeals rejected his appeal in a civil sexual assault case.
