Dispute Between Ben Ferguson and Bakari Sellers Over Recent Shooting
On Wednesday, conservative talk show host Ben Ferguson engaged in a heated discussion with CNN political commentator Bakari Sellers regarding a tragic shooting incident in Dallas, Texas. The shooter, Joshua Yarn, tragically took his own life after opening fire at an ice facility, resulting in the deaths of two detainees.
During the exchange, Ferguson noted that this incident marked the third attack in Texas, emphasizing that it was the second press conference held by officials on the same day. Sellers probed deeper, asking explicitly, “Who was killed today?”
While the shooting led to the deaths of two undocumented individuals, no ICE agents were harmed. Ferguson argued that, regardless of the circumstances, innocent lives should not be lost. He suggested that the inflammatory rhetoric from Democratic politicians regarding law enforcement might be contributing to an increase in such attacks.
Sellers countered, suggesting that Ferguson’s perspective was flawed. He stated, “I’m not sowing anything; I’m protecting all law enforcement agencies,” referencing Governor Gavin Newsom’s comments labeling ICE agents as authoritarian figures. Ferguson questioned whether that sort of language could inspire violence.
Sellers criticized Democratic leaders for their portrayal of ICE agents, while Ferguson claimed most politically motivated attacks do not originate from conservatives. He stressed, “We’re not shooting people. The left wing is,” referencing his own painful experience with a friend who was shot recently, an incident he connected to irresponsible leftist rhetoric.
Newsom had previously referred to ICE as “the biggest civilian army,” linking their actions to what he described as authoritarian tendencies. Other Democrats have made similar comments, criticizing ICE since the Trump administration’s strict immigration policies took hold.
Comments from various Democratic representatives have further fueled the debate. For instance, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez labeled ICE a “rigged institution” unworthy of existence, while Rep. Jasmine Crockett drew analogies to historical “slave patrols.” Rep. Ilhan Omar has gone so far as to demand that ICE be abolished altogether.
This recent shooting adds to a troubling pattern of violence against ICE facilities, highlighted by previous incidents, including a July ambush in Alvarado, Texas, which left a police officer injured.
